Vaillant F29: the burner lit and then the flame went out

F.29 on a Vaillant means the burner lit and then the flame went out, and the boiler could not get it back within the re-ignition attempts it is allowed. That is not F.28, which is a boiler that never lit at all, and the difference narrows the cause immediately: something interrupted a flame that was already burning, or the boiler lost the ability to prove it was still there. It comes down to four things. A gas supply that falls away once the burner draws properly, a condensate trap that is blocked or frozen, an ionisation electrode that can no longer read the flame it sits in, or flue products getting back into the combustion chamber. Two of those you can check yourself in ten minutes.

What F29 means on a Vaillant boiler

Every ignition on an ecoTEC runs the same sequence. The fan purges, the gas valve opens, the spark electrodes fire, and the flame establishes on the burner. From then on the boiler watches that flame through the ionisation electrode, a probe sitting in the flame that passes a tiny rectified current back to the control board. A flame conducts in one direction only, so that current is the proof that real combustion is happening rather than an open gas valve and no fire.

If the current disappears while the burner is running, the board shuts the gas valve at once and tries to re-light. After the permitted attempts it locks out on F.29. The boiler is reporting one of two situations and cannot tell them apart: the flame genuinely went out, or it was still burning and the boiler stopped sensing it. Diagnosis is deciding which. If the display is showing F.28 rather than F.29, the boiler never lit at all, which is a shorter list of causes and a different page.

Other makes group both events under a single code, which is why an Ideal boiler L2 covers ground that Vaillant splits in two. A Baxi E133 does the same thing again under a third label. The badge on the case decides the number you read, not the order the causes are worked through, so the sequence below holds whichever appliance is on the wall.

One check costs nothing and narrows it before any of that. A boiler sitting in lockout is not burning gas at all, so it takes the heating and the hot water together. If the radiators are warming normally and only the hot water has stopped, you have no hot water but the heating works, the boiler is clearly firing, and F.29 is not what you are looking at.

Reset it twice, then stop. Each reset opens the gas valve into a chamber that has just failed to burn properly. Twice tells you whether the fault has cleared. Ten times does not.

Check the gas supply before anything else

A boiler that lights and dies within a few seconds is the signature of gas that is present but not sustained. The burner draws very little at ignition and a great deal once it ramps up, so a restricted supply holds a flame briefly and then starves it. An isolation lever left at part turn after previous work, a seized meter valve, a prepayment meter run down, or an LPG tank getting low will all do it.

This part needs no tools. If the hob lights and burns steadily on full, the supply into the property is broadly there. If nothing else in the house works on gas either, the problem is upstream of the boiler and resetting will not help. Where there is no code at all and simply no hot water, the no hot water checklist before you call is the better place to start.

  • Light a hob ring and leave it on full for a minute to see whether it holds
  • Check credit on a prepayment meter, including whether emergency credit has run out
  • Check the lever on the gas pipe under the boiler sits in line with the pipe
  • Note whether it fails on hot water only, on heating only, or on both
  • Note whether it fails instantly or after half a minute of running

Touch nothing beyond that isolation lever. Do not adjust the meter, the gas valve or any test point. If you smell gas, do not reset the boiler. Open the windows, turn the supply off at the meter and call the national gas emergency line.

A blocked or frozen condensate trap behind an F29

A condensing boiler makes water as it runs, and that water leaves through a trap at the bottom of the boiler and out through a plastic pipe. The trap holds a water seal so flue products cannot come back into the room through the drain. If the outside pipe freezes, or the trap silts up with the fine debris condensate carries, the water backs up inside the boiler. The combustion chamber stops draining, the flame is disturbed, and it drops out on F.29.

This one is seasonal. A boiler that has run for years and starts failing on the first genuinely cold night, particularly in a flat where the condensate runs down an outside wall in exposed plastic, is almost always a frozen condensate. The extra clue is a gurgling from the bottom of the boiler in the seconds before it locks out.

Thawing it yourself is reasonable if the pipe is at ground level. Warm water poured slowly along the exposed run, or a hot water bottle held against it, will clear it, and boiling water can split the plastic. Once water runs again, reset once. A condensate that freezes every winter is a pipework problem, and the answer is a larger bore pipe, a shorter external run, or rerouting it internally.

Do not go up a ladder to reach a condensate pipe, and do not work on one running over a flat roof. If the frozen section is not reachable with both feet on the ground, leave it.

When the boiler cannot see a flame that is burning

If gas and condensate are clean, attention moves to flame sensing. The ionisation electrode is a thin probe with a ceramic insulator living permanently in the hottest part of the boiler. The tip corrodes and thins, carbon deposits form, the ceramic can hairline crack, and the gap between electrode and burner drifts as metal moves. Any of those drops the flame current below the threshold the board expects, and a perfectly good flame reads as no flame at all. On many ecoTEC models the spark and sensing electrodes are one assembly, so the part gets changed rather than the tip cleaned.

The other half of flame sensing is the electrical supply, and it is the cause most often missed. Rectified flame current only works against a sound earth, so a poor earth on the fused spur, or a live and neutral swapped at some point, gives exactly this fault: intermittent lockouts with no pattern, a boiler that runs for days then drops out three times in an evening. Polarity and earth continuity get checked before any component is condemned.

What settles it is the flame current itself, read in microamps while the burner runs. A stable healthy reading moves the fault back to gas or combustion. A low reading, or one that decays as the boiler heats up, points at the electrode, its lead, or the earth.

Combustion, gas valve and flue faults that cause F29

The remaining causes are combustion quality. A Vaillant sets its air to gas ratio through the fan and gas valve working together, and that ratio is checked with a flue gas analyser, not by eye. If it has drifted, or the gas valve is not responding correctly, the flame can run lean enough to lift off the burner and go out under load while lighting happily at low rate.

Flue faults reach the same place another way. If internal seals have failed, or the terminal sits where the plume is pulled straight back in, the burner breathes its own products, oxygen at the flame drops and the flame collapses. A terminal packed with leaves, snow or a nest does the same. Anyone can look at the terminal from the ground, but nobody should be taking flue components apart. On a boiler that has never been serviced, a combustion check and a clean often resolve F.29 with no part replaced.

  • Flame current in microamps at the board while the burner runs
  • Polarity and earth continuity at the boiler supply
  • Working gas pressure at full rate, not just standing pressure

Why an intermittent F29 is harder to find than a constant one

An F29 that locks the boiler out every time it fires is straightforward, because the fault is present while somebody is standing in front of it with an analyser. An F29 that appears twice in an evening and then not again for three weeks is the harder job, and the difference is worth understanding before anybody attends.

Almost everything that causes an intermittent F29 is conditional on something outside the boiler. A condensate pipe blocks when the outside temperature drops below freezing and clears when it rises. A gas supply that is marginal holds up until the hob and the boiler ask at the same time. An electrode with a hairline crack in its ceramic reads a flame perfectly until the case is hot and the crack opens. A marginal earth on the fused spur gives a flame current that sits just above the threshold and drops below it at random.

That is why the pattern matters as much as the readings. Write down the date, the time, the outside temperature and what else in the property was running each time it locks out. Four entries in a notebook narrow the list more than an hour of testing on a day when the boiler behaves. Where the fault genuinely will not show itself, the honest answer is a staged diagnosis rather than a part fitted on a hunch, which is what our boiler diagnosis service is for.

There is a point at which this stops being worth chasing. An appliance well past fifteen years old that has already had a gas valve or a board, and now drops out on F.29 several times a week, is a different conversation from a boiler with one lockout and a full service history, and our boiler replacement page sets out what that decision actually turns on.

While the fault is being chased there may be a stopgap in the property. Where the boiler feeds a cylinder rather than heating water on demand, the immersion heater will give you a tank on electricity in the meantime. It is worth switching on and checking that it actually heats, because an immersion heater not working is usually discovered on the evening it is needed rather than the year it failed, and an immersion heater repair is a separate job from the boiler fault. It does nothing for the F.29, but it takes the urgency out of the week while the lockout is diagnosed properly.

  • Locks out on cold nights and runs fine by mid morning: the condensate pipe is freezing
  • Locks out only when another gas appliance is running: working pressure falling under load
  • Locks out once the boiler is hot and runs again when cool: electrode, lead or earth failing with heat
  • Locks out at random with no pattern: flame sensing, polarity or earth continuity
  • Keep a written log of dates, times, weather and what else was running

What is the difference between F.28 and F.29 on a Vaillant?
F.28 means the boiler never established a flame during the ignition attempt. F.29 means it did establish one and then lost it, or lost the ability to sense it. F.28 points more strongly at no gas or no spark. F.29 points at a supply that falls away under load, a blocked or frozen condensate, a flame sensing fault, or flue products getting back into the combustion chamber.
Can I fix a Vaillant F29 myself?
Sometimes. Checking that other gas appliances work, that a prepayment meter has credit, that the isolation lever under the boiler is in line with the pipe, and that the external condensate pipe is not frozen are all reasonable to do yourself, and between them they account for a lot of winter callouts. Anything beyond that means opening the boiler and working on the gas carriage, which is qualified work.
Why does my Vaillant only show F29 when it is cold outside?
Because the condensate pipe is freezing. The boiler produces water as it runs and sends it outside through a plastic pipe, and once that pipe blocks with ice the water backs up into the boiler and disturbs combustion. Thawing the pipe usually restores it immediately. A pipe that does this every winter needs rerouting or upsizing rather than thawing again each year.
How many times can I reset the boiler?
Twice, then stop. A reset runs the full ignition sequence again, which opens the gas valve into a chamber that has just failed to burn properly. If it locks out again within minutes, treat it as a fault that needs an engineer. If it locks out and then runs normally for weeks, write down the dates and the weather, because an intermittent F.29 is diagnosed from its pattern as much as from anything measured on the day.
Is it safe to keep using the boiler if it resets and runs?
A boiler that locks out is doing what it is designed to do, so one lockout that clears and does not return is not an emergency. Repeated lockouts are different, because the underlying fault is still there. If you smell gas, see soot or staining around the case, or the lockouts come several times a day, stop using it and have it looked at.
Does F29 mean I need a new boiler?
Rarely. On its own it is a fault code about flame loss, and the usual causes are a frozen or silted condensate, an electrode assembly at the end of its life, a supply or earthing problem, or a combustion setting that has drifted. Replacement only comes into it when the fault turns out to be a cracked heat exchanger or a failed control board on an older unit where the economics no longer work.
How much does a Vaillant F29 repair cost?
