Albion Cylinders Explained
An Albion cylinder is an unvented stainless steel hot water cylinder built by Albion Water Heaters in Shropshire, and the range you almost certainly have is Ultrasteel. Albion now sits inside the Kingspan group, which is why the badge on the cupboard door can say Albion while the literature or the parts list says Kingspan Ultrasteel: one family of product under two names, not two competing cylinders. That clears up most of the confusion people arrive with, because searching one name and finding the other makes it look as though your cylinder has been discontinued when it has not. What is an Albion cylinder
An Albion cylinder is an unvented hot water cylinder: a sealed stainless steel vessel holding the hot water you wash in, fed off the incoming cold mains and heated by a boiler coil, an immersion element or both. Because it works at mains pressure there is no cold tank in the loft, so taps and showers run at whatever flow the street supply gives.
Everything else follows from the vessel being sealed. Heated water expands, so the installation carries an expansion vessel on the cold feed, inlet controls holding that feed at a controlled pressure, and safety relief valves that dump through a tundish into a discharge pipe running outside. The tundish is the visible open air gap in a pipe near the unit, and it is the most useful thing in the cupboard for anyone working out what they have.

Is Albion the same as Kingspan
Albion is a brand inside the Kingspan group rather than a rival, so an Albion cylinder and a Kingspan Ultrasteel are not two products you choose between. Kingspan acquired Albion Water Heaters, and the Ultrasteel name has since appeared under both badges depending on the generation.
That matters in three ways. If you search the wording on your data plate and land on a Kingspan page, you have found the current home of the range, not the wrong product. Spares and technical support for older Albion badged units run through Kingspan channels, so quoting the Albion name alone to a merchant sometimes gets a blank look where quoting the model and serial does not. And an engineer who calls an Albion obsolete because the name has moved is telling you about their own familiarity with the range, not about your cylinder.
Older units complicate this. Albion sat within a wider Shropshire engineering business before the Kingspan era, and cylinders from that period carry badges and paperwork matching nothing on a current website. None of that changes what is in the cupboard.
When you ring anybody about parts, lead with the model name, capacity in litres and serial number from the data plate rather than with the brand on the front. The badge has changed. The plate has not.
How do I identify an Albion cylinder
Find the data plate and photograph it. It is normally a printed label on the front or side of the white casing near the top, carrying the model name, the capacity in litres, the serial number and the working pressures. That photograph answers most later questions.
If the label has gone, which happens in older London properties where cupboards have been painted around, work through the physical evidence. A tundish and a discharge pipe to outside confirm an unvented cylinder rather than a thermal store. A separate expansion vessel near the inlet controls, usually a small steel bottle on a bracket, is the arrangement most Albion installations here use, and that is good news, because a perished diaphragm is an ordinary replaceable part.
One thing you cannot see is the feature the range is named for. The Ultrasteel vessel is formed with a rippled wall rather than a smooth one, which stiffens it and adds internal surface area, but it sits under foamed insulation and casing.

What are the main Albion ranges
Ultrasteel is the range that matters, and in London it is what we find nine times out of ten. Around it sit heat pump cylinders and a smaller catalogue of vented and combination cylinders for properties that cannot take an unvented installation.
Ultrasteel comes in the variants you would expect. Indirect models carry a boiler coil and an immersion element. Direct models are heated by immersion elements only, which is what goes into flats with no gas supply. Twin coil versions take a second heat source such as solar thermal. Slimline and compact variants exist for the narrow airing cupboards Victorian conversions are full of, and the trade off is the same whoever makes it: a taller, thinner vessel of the same capacity gives up recovery and makes withdrawing an element harder.
The heat pump cylinders are a genuinely different design rather than a badge change. A heat pump delivers water at a far lower flow temperature than a gas boiler, so the cylinder needs much greater coil surface area to move the same heat into the store. Fitting a standard boiler cylinder to a heat pump and expecting the same recovery is a common specification error we are asked to unpick.

What actually goes wrong with an Albion cylinder
The fittings fail, not the steel. That is true of every well made stainless unvented cylinder, and it is the most useful thing to know before anybody quotes for a replacement, because almost everything on the common fault list unbolts.
In rough order of how often we attend them: the immersion element scales up and burns out, so hot water stops or slows right down. The expansion vessel diaphragm perishes and the tundish drips every time the cylinder heats. The inlet pressure reducing valve drifts or sticks. A relief valve begins to pass after years of duty and weeps. The motorised valve on the heating side sticks, so the boiler never gets the call to heat the cylinder. Immersion plate gaskets weep once disturbed.
What we rarely see is the vessel giving up early. The stainless work on this range is sound, and a cylinder serviced sensibly outlives several sets of valves and elements. When stainless does eventually weep it cannot be patched or welded back into service, so that one fault is a genuine replacement. Establish first that the water is coming from the steel and not from a joint, a gasket or a valve above it, because water runs down the outside of a cylinder and pools at the base whatever it leaked from.
A dripping tundish is a safety device doing exactly what it was fitted to do. Nobody should cap it, plug it or pipe it away. It is telling you a component upstream has failed and needs finding.
Can you still get Albion parts
Yes, and more easily than the brand confusion suggests, because the parts that fail on an Ultrasteel are ordinary industry components rather than proprietary ones. That is the strongest practical argument for the range.
The immersion element screws into a standard boss and comes off any merchant shelf. The expansion vessel is a commodity potable water vessel. The inlet control components are the same valve families used across the unvented sector, and the motorised valve is a standard two port valve. There is no proprietary control board between you and a repair, the thing that quietly ends the life of more complicated hot water products. An engineer with a stocked van fixes most Albion faults on the first visit.
Where it does get fiddly is worth saying plainly. On discontinued slimline, compact and horizontal models, matching a like for like vessel years later can be awkward, because the coil connection positions and the dimensions that made the unit fit a tight cupboard are exactly what changed between generations. Paperwork for older Albion badged units is thin. Record the model and serial now rather than when something is dripping.

How does London water treat an Albion cylinder
Hard, in exactly the way it treats every stored hot water product here. Almost the whole London supply area is hard water, and the consequences are predictable: scale forms on the element and the boiler coil, recovery gets slower every year, and elements fail sooner than they would in a soft water region.
The mechanism on the element explains the repeat failures people find so frustrating. Deposits build on the heated surface, that layer insulates the element from the water it is meant to warm, the element runs hotter than designed and burns out. Put a cheap copper sheathed element back in and it happens again. Two decisions help: specify an Incoloy or titanium sheathed element, and do not run the store hotter than the household needs.
The coil scales the same way, more slowly and invisibly. Heat transfer into the store drops, reheat takes longer, and households blame the boiler for years before anybody looks at the cylinder. The rippled Ultrasteel wall gives the store more internal surface area than a smooth vessel of the same size, which is a real design advantage, but no geometry stops scale forming on the heated components themselves. None of this is specific to Albion. It is the water, and the answer is an annual service by somebody qualified to work on unvented systems rather than a different badge.
Where the cylinder sits changes what that service costs. In Victorian conversions the unit is usually in the tightest cupboard in the flat, at the top of a staircase with a turn in it, and we regularly find no room to withdraw an element without taking the cupboard apart. In new builds with liquid screed over underfloor heating, the pipe routes around the cylinder are less forgiving than they look. Purpose built blocks from the nineteen nineties onward often have thermal stores rather than cylinders, so an Albion badge there is worth checking against the tundish test first.
Should you repair or replace an older Albion cylinder
Repair whenever the failed component is available and the vessel is sound, which on this range is nearly always. Replace when the stainless itself has failed, when the cylinder is badly undersized for the household, or when the heat source is changing and the cylinder cannot serve it.
A dead immersion element, a perished expansion vessel, a drifted pressure reducing valve, a passing relief valve or a stuck motorised valve are all routine repairs that keep a good cylinder in service for years. Replacing a cylinder because one of those failed is the most expensive mistake in this subject, and a common one, because a dripping tundish looks alarming and a replacement quote arrives faster than a diagnosis. Insist on knowing which component failed before you agree to anything.
The genuine replacement cases are narrow. Stainless that has started to weep cannot be brought back. A cylinder that never recovers fast enough because it was specified for a smaller household is a sizing problem no repair fixes. A property moving to a heat pump needs the coil area to suit low flow temperatures. Age alone is not a reason: an old Ultrasteel with a sound vessel and a new element beats a badly installed new one.

What replacing an Albion cylinder involves
Diagnosis first, then most London replacements are a full day of work. Nobody should quote a replacement before establishing which component failed, because the difference between a valve and a vessel is the difference between a short visit and an installation.
Where the steel has gone, the sequence runs like this. Isolate and drain, disconnect the coil connections, the cold feed, the immersion wiring and the discharge pipework, get the old unit out of a cupboard that was usually built around it, set the new one, remake every connection, fit and set the inlet control group, run the discharge to outside, then refill, vent, commission and test the safety devices. Cost is driven by the specification of the cylinder going back in, how much pipework has to be remade because the connection positions do not match, whether the discharge arrangement needs redoing, and how bad the access is. The first question we ask is where the unit sits and what the incoming mains can deliver, not which badge goes back in. A flat whose supply cannot give sensible flow at pressure is not fixed by a bigger cylinder.
