The second reason is simpler and less often said out loud. Out of hours work is harder. The occupants are frightened, the water is often already through a ceiling, there is no daylight, and there is no option to pop out to a merchant for the right fitting. An engineer doing a burst pipe repair at two in the morning is working with fewer options than the same engineer at eleven in the morning, and fewer options means more time and more stock used.

The third reason is the one that should annoy you, because it is not a real cost at all. Some of what people pay at night is the cost of advertising rather than the cost of plumbing. A firm that buys its calls, through paid placement, a directory charging per lead, or a national booking operation that subcontracts to a local engineer, has to recover that spend from the invoice. Nobody is doing anything illegal, but it is money that buys you no plumbing.

The fee exists because travel and diagnosis happen whether or not the job goes ahead. Firms advertising no call-out fee have not made that cost disappear, they have moved it into the hourly rate or the parts margin. Both can be honest. The dishonest version is the fee quoted as the price, with the rest mentioned only once the water is off and the floor is up.

A call-out fee should be a single stated number, told to you before anyone is dispatched. Ask the two questions that matter: what does the fee include, and what is the rate after it. If the answer to either is vague, that vagueness is deliberate, and you should assume it will not resolve in your favour.

The standby cost: paying for someone to be awake

The largest hidden cost in emergency work is the cover itself. Answering reliably through the night needs a rota of engineers giving up their evenings, and someone answering the phone rather than an answering machine. On most nights that rota produces one call or none, and all of it is paid for out of the jobs that do come in.

Team size changes the maths. We run twenty engineers, so night cover rotates and nobody is expected to work a full day after a call at four in the morning. A one man operation cannot do that, which is why independent sole traders often do not answer at night, and why the number you find at 2am is frequently a call centre routing to whoever is available.

None of this makes a night rate arbitrary. The rate reflects a service that has to exist before you need it, and readiness is expensive precisely because most of it is never used.

Why closed wholesalers change the price of the job

At night, whatever is on the van is the entire universe of available parts. Every plumbers merchant in London is shut, and that single fact changes how a job gets done more than anything else. The engineer either has the right part, has a part that will do, or fits a temporary solution and comes back.

That pushes firms into carrying far more stock than a daytime van would need. The third model is the one to watch. A low advertised call-out plus separately billed parts at a heavy markup can end up anywhere, because the part is where the margin hides and you cannot check what a valve should cost at two in the morning. Ask for parts and labour shown separately, and ask what a part will add before it is fitted.

Call immediately for an uncontrollable leak, a burst pipe, water coming through a ceiling or a light fitting, a discharge pipe running continuously from an unvented cylinder, scalding water at a tap, or any smell of gas, which goes to the national gas emergency line first. In those cases every hour of delay adds damage or risk, and the premium is cheap against a ceiling.

Wait until morning for a dripping tap you can contain in a bucket, a single cold radiator, or no hot water in a household with an immersion heater to fall back on. A cold shower at midnight is unpleasant. It is not worth a night rate, and any firm that encourages you to treat it as one is selling you the premium rather than the repair.
